Why do multiple fire apparatus show up for single car accidents?

Multiple fire engines and/or trucks will only show up to a single vehicle accident if there are extenuating circumstances involved which could require additional personnel. An example of this would be an accident with someone trapped in a vehicle who needs extrication.

Under this circumstance we would send a fire engine carrying hose and water supply. This is necessary as there is a potential for fire in any vehicle accident. We would also send a fire truck which carries rescue equipment and power tools. All of these operations require enough trained personnel to manipulate equipment and extricate the trapped person successfully.  Under these circumstances we would also have an ambulance respond in case there is a medical emergency.

When a senior citizen “falls” why does a fire truck respond with the ambulance?

A fall for a senior citizen is often a very frightening and sometimes life altering incident. One of the major causes of traumatic injuries to seniors is from falling down. We take these types of emergency responses very seriously because of our experience.

The Ventnor City Fire Department is also required to comply with the State of New Jersey Emergency Medical Services protocols call for medical emergencies. These protocols require a specific number of personnel to respond to treat & move the injured person based on the injury.

My smoke detector is chirping, what does that mean?

Most modern smoke detectors will chirp to alert you the batteries are low, you should replace the batteries and test your smoke detector.  Smoke detectors can be purchased at any hardware or large commercial department store

Where should smoke detectors be placed in our home?

For complete coverage in residential homes, smoke detectors should be installed in all rooms, halls, storage areas, basements and attics.  Minimum coverage is one detector on each level.

However, we suggest that you:

  • Put a smoke detector in every sleeping quarter.
  • Put a smoke detector on every floor of your home.
  • Put a smoke detector as close to the center of the ceiling as possible.
  • Acceptable locations are no closer than 4" from side wall. You may mount on the wall at least 4" from the ceiling, but no more than 6" from the ceiling.
What is the best kind of fire extinguisher for my house?

A multi-purpose fire extinguisher is best for the home. Look for the rating to be at minimum 2A 10B C on the label. This extinguisher can be used on any type of fire commonly found in the home. (It will often be labeled A-B-C.) It is recommended that an extinguisher be installed in the kitchen and in the garage.

What should I do if my carbon monoxide alarm activates?

Call 9-1-1 immediately. The Fire Department will respond to test the air for carbon monoxide and ventilate if CO is present. Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless and deadly.

Why do so many fire trucks have to respond?

Units are dispatched based on predetermined criteria and according to information received by the 9-1-1 dispatcher.

I saw Ventnor City Fire Department Units responding outside of Ventnor. Why were they doing that?

The VCFD provides mutual aid response to our neighboring communities when they need our assistance. Some of these communities also respond to Ventnor to assist us.

I saw a fire vehicle at the local supermarket and some firefighters were inside buying food. Why do firefighters use fire trucks to tend to non-emergency business?

To ensure the most effective service at the time of an emergency, our firefighter crews must stay together during their entire shift. Our firefighters work 24-hour shifts and have no scheduled meal breaks. They usually stop to pick up food and supplies for the station. They maintain constant radio contact with the dispatcher and respond to an emergency regardless of their location.

How can I obtain a copy of my ambulance report?

Contact the fire department at 609-823-7942 with the date/ time of the incident and the report will be made available for a $5 fee.

How do I obtain a fire report?

There are two (3) ways to obtain a structure/building fire report. Reports can be requested over the telephone, 609-823-7942 or faxed to 609-823-7767 or a request made be made in writing to the  Ventnor City Fire Department (20 N New Haven Ave – Ventnor, NJ 08406).
