VENTNOR CITY HYDRANT FLUSHING

Dear Residents,

We are pleased to inform you that our municipal water storage tank is expected to return to full service during the week of May 18th, pending final operational checks. This is an important step in maintaining the reliability and quality of our water system.

In conjunction with bringing the tank back online, the city will be conducting its annual hydrant flushing program from May 25 through June 19. This routine maintenance is essential to ensure the continued safety, quality, and efficiency of our water distribution system. Hydrant flushing helps remove sediment buildup within the pipes, verifies proper hydrant operation, and maintains adequate water flow for both daily use and fire protection.

What to Expect:
During the flushing process, residents may notice temporary discoloration of their water and/or a slight drop in water pressure. While this may be inconvenient, please be assured that these conditions are temporary and do not pose a health risk.

One of the primary causes of discolored water during flushing is the presence of iron, which is classified as a secondary contaminant in drinking water. Secondary contaminants are not considered harmful to health at typical levels but can affect the aesthetic qualities of water such as color, taste, and odor. Iron can accumulate naturally in water mains over time and may become disturbed during flushing activities, resulting in water that appears yellow, orange, or brown.

While this discoloration can be concerning, it does not indicate a safety issue. However, elevated iron levels can sometimes cause staining of laundry, fixtures, and appliances. If you experience discolored water, we recommend running cold water from a faucet for several minutes until it clears. You may also want to check your water before doing laundry and avoid using hot water until the discoloration has resolved, as hot water can set stains.

Schedule and Notifications:
Flushing will occur in phases throughout the system between May 25 and June 19. The Heights area will be serviced first. Following that, flushing will proceed from Jackson Avenue south to Fredericksburg Avenue. Additional neighborhood-specific updates will be communicated as they become available. We encourage residents to monitor City communications and plan accordingly.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we perform this necessary maintenance. These efforts play a critical role in delivering safe, clean, and reliable water to our community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the City Water Department at 609 823.7935.
